In January of 2009, The Royal Mint launched a nationwide competition, inviting the British public to fabricate designs for a new series of 50p coins intended to commemorate the 2012 Summer Olympics. The 30,000 entries that were submitted have been narrowed down to the best design for each of the 29 featured sports to manufacture lasting mementos of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games. Each coin features the distinctive sport-specific pictogram with the London 2012 logo on one side, making them a perfective collectible keepsake for any fan of the games!
